about

Theodor Herzl, (born May 2, 1860, Budapest, Hungary, Austrian Empire [now in Hungary]—died July 3, 1904, Edlach, Austria), founder of the political form of Zionism, a movement to establish a Jewish homeland. His pamphlet The Jewish State (1896) proposed that the Jewish question was a political question to be settled by a world council of nations. He organized a world congress of Zionists that met in Basel, Switzerland, in August 1897 and became first president of the World Zionist Organization, established by the congress. Although Herzl died more than 40 years before the establishment of the State of Israel, he was an indefatigable organizer, propagandist, and diplomat who had much to do with making Zionism into a political movement of worldwide significance.

A profound change began in Herzl’s life soon after a sketch he had published in the leading Viennese newspaper, Neue Freie Presse, led to his appointment as the paper’s Paris correspondent. He arrived in Paris with his wife in the fall of 1891 and was shocked to find in the homeland of the French Revolution the same anti-Semitism with which he had become so familiar in Austria. Hitherto he had regarded anti-Semitism as a social problem that the Jews could overcome only by abandoning their distinctive ways and assimilating to the people among whom they lived. At the same time, his work as a newspaperman heightened his interest in, and knowledge of, social and political affairs and led him to the conviction that the answer to anti-Semitism was not assimilation but organized counter efforts by the Jews. The Dreyfus affair in France also helped crystallize this belief. French military documents had been given to German agents, and a Jewish officer named Alfred Dreyfus had been falsely charged with the crime. The ensuing political controversy produced an outburst of anti-Semitism among the French public. Herzl said in later years that it was the Dreyfus affair that had made a Zionist out of him. So long as anti-Semitism existed, assimilation would be impossible, and the only solution for the majority of Jews would be organized emigration to a state of their own.

As a small boy, I read the biography called Herzl by author Alex Bein. I devoured this book and could not put it down until finished. What I concluded from the book was Herzl saw the Holocaust against the Jews of Europe and the world coming. He knew and did everything in his power to establish the state of Israel where Jews could flee to and live as free human beings on their own terms. But the state was created too late as it turned out. SIX MILLION Jews perished at the hand of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. SIX MILLION souls and ONLY because they were born Jewish.
Herzl made a lifelong impact on generations of Israelis and Jews and he is Israel's founding father. Visiting his gravesite in Jerusalem was a powerful moment for me personally. May G-d rest his soul forever and ever.

So, when Rabbi Aryel Nachman ben Chaim first came to me with the conceptual idea of putting an album together celebrating the birth of Israel, I jumped at the chance because I knew I could further push the relevance of Herzl amongst a long list of Jews who paved the way for the state of Israel to exist. David Ben Gurion, Menachem Begin, Moshe Dayan, and Golda Meir are important players in our brief history and there are countless others, chief among them Zev Jabotinsky, Chaim Weitzman, Yitzhak Ben Zvi, Levi Eshkol, Yitzhak Shamir, Ariel Sharon, Eli Cohen, Yoni Netanyahu, Bibi Netanyahu, and every single man and woman who serve and served in the Israel Defense Force. May G-d bless all of you.

Sandy Bennett Ruttenberg - Co-composer and Pianist on songs 1& 5. Mum also plays piano on song 8. Yes, my 84 year old Mum possesses immense talent and her ability to express complex musical ideas remains vibrant. World famous Pianist from Japan, Makoto Ozone has heard her play and is completely impressed by her performance. In her younger life, Mum played professionally around the world and was a highly sought after nightclub performer in Pittsburgh for decades at the Wooden Nickel, The Top Shelf, and various country club events. She also wrote music for a film shot in Pittsburgh called The Devil & Sam Silverstein. Funny movie! Thank you Mumsy! I love you forever and ever!

Rabbi Ancel Salamon recites Tehillem 14 and 33 on this album, movements III & IV. His voice is direct, powerful, and filled with passion. He is a former fighter pilot in the Israeli Air Force. Baad cat! Thanks Rabbi!

Executive Producer Rabbi Aryel Nachman ben Chaim plays the Shofar on song 2 and the conceptual idea for this project was all his. He is a delightful man and smart as a whip. I have learned a very significant truth having worked with him on several preceding video films and albums. I've learned that as difficult and complex his ideas seem when he proposes them, I nevertheless feel blessed in the making of them (The ideas come fast to me, and each song writes itself as if being transmitted for a higher source). I know how that must sound to many, but it happened to me on all three of his projects (19 songs written for the Shemoneh Esrei Project & YouTube video named Rabbi Nachman's Dream). Baruch Hashem! The Rabbi is my friend and a valued musical colleague. Thank you for the confidence you've shown in me.

The GREAT Joe Berger is a legendary sound engineer and guitarist who prior to Covid 19 travelled the world non stop, and I mean non stop for years playing in the Jon Hammond Band. He also shared the stage with notable greats like Alan Parsons, Billy Cobham, John Entwhistle, etc. He travels the globe, representing guitar companies and sound equipment companies to demonstrate their high end, complex products to adoring crowds. Joe has has done well over 35,000 live shows as the sound engineer including huge festivals for big name talents. JoeZilla, as I call him, is a monster in the music business and is revered by all. Joe masters all of my music. When he gets his ears fixed in on my mixes, he adds just the right amount "garlic, pepper, salt, etc. to the meal". He is much like Chef Emeril Legasse. His knowledge is unequalled and I could not be happier to call him a mentor and friend. Thank you my man!

Richard D. Ruttenberg. Modulus 002, Korg Karma, Korg Kronos, Elektron Analog 4V keys, Aarp Odyssey, E drums. Composed, orchestrated, arranged, edited, programmed & mixed all tracks except the co-writes with my extremely talented mother and I am so proud we finally got the chance to work together! She understands my music and has always been incredibly supportive. Thank you, Mum! I'm a BMI registered recording artist with more than 25 albums to my credit. I'm also a film scorer. A 2018 film called "I Am Ana" made a nice splash at the Cannes Film Festival, won first place at the Hollywood International Moving Pictures and Los Angeles Film Festival. I've also done a few Hollywood produced documentary films, one of which, The Story Man, won the Utah Film Festival and placed 2d at the Philadelphia International Film Festival. Another, about Disney Artist Zofia Kostyrko - Edwards was my personal favorite! A must see! This amazing film made the festival circuit and ran worldwide for a couple of years.
